Specialty Software Engineering Senior Manager - AI / ML, Python, Java

About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a Specialty Software Engineering Senior Manager - Innovation Lead for Trade Surveillance to drive innovation strategy and execution across the Investment Banking and Trade Surveillance domain. This role will lead cross‑functional teams to design, pilot, and scale innovative solutions that enhance regulatory effectiveness, operational efficiency, and digital transformation.


In this role, you will:

  • Manage, coach, and develop a team or teams of engineering managers and experienced engineers in specialized domain areas, in roles with moderate complexity and risk responsible for building high quality capabilities with modern technology
  • Ensure adherence to the Banking Platform Architecture, and meeting non-functional requirements with each release
  • Partner with, engage and influence architects and experienced engineers to incorporate Wells Fargo Technology technical strategies, while understanding next generation domain architecture and enable application migration paths to target architecture; for example cloud readiness, application modernization, data strategy
  • Function as the technical representative for the product during cross-team collaborative efforts and planning
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for driving escalated resolution of technology roadblocks including code, build and deployment while also managing overall software development cycle and security standards
  • Determine appropriate strategy and actions to act as an escalation partner for scrum masters and the teams to meet moderate to high-risk deliverables and help remove impediments, obstacles, and friction while encouraging constant learning, experimentation, and continual improvement
  • Build engineering skills side-by-side in the codebase, conduct peer reviews to evaluate quality and solution alignment to technical direction, and guide design, as needed
  • Interpret, develop and ensure security, stability, and scalability within functions of technology with moderate complexity, as well as identify, manage and mitigate technology and enterprise risk
  • Collaborate with, partner with and influence Product Managers/Product Owners to drive user satisfaction, influence technology requirements and priorities in the product roadmap, promote innovative and intelligent solutions, generate corporate value and articulate technical strategy while being a solid advocate of agile and DevOps practices
  • Interact directly with third party vendors and technology service providers
  • Manage allocation of people and financial resources to ensure commitments are met and align with strategic objectives in technology engineering
  • Hire, build and guide a culture of talent development to have the specialized domain experience and skills required to effectively design and deliver innovative solutions for product areas and products to meet business objectives and strategy, as well as conduct performance management for engineers and managers

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of Specialty Software Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • 3+ years of management or leadership experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proven experience (10+ years) in driving innovation, digital transformation, or product strategy within Banking, Financial Services, or a regulated environment.
  • Strong leadership and people‑management skills, with demonstrated ability to lead cross‑functional and geographically distributed teams.
  • Expertise in innovation frameworks, emerging technologies, and design‑thinking or agile methodologies to ideate, pilot, and scale solutions.
  • Solid understanding of regulatory, compliance, and surveillance domains, with the ability to align innovation initiatives to risk and governance requirements.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience influencing senior leaders and executive partners.
  • 3+ years of management or leadership experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and Python, with experience in building scalable, enterprise‑grade applications and services.
  • Solid understanding of database technologies (relational and/or NoSQL), including data modeling, querying, and performance optimization.
  • Hands‑on experience or strong exposure to AI/ML concepts, tools, and platforms, enabling intelligent automation and advanced analytics use cases.
  • Familiarity with modern AI productivity and coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, Devin, or similar AI‑assisted development and innovation tools.
  • Experience integrating emerging technologies into existing systems within a regulated or enterprise environment.

  • Lead the transformation of an established engineering team, elevating capabilities, embedding modern ways of working, and driving a high‑performance, outcomes‑focused culture.
  • Partner with cross‑functional stakeholders and product leaders to align with evolving business direction, influence technology priorities, and represent engineering in planning and decision‑making.
  • Develop and manage engineering talent and leaders, ensuring delivery of high‑quality, modern, secure, and scalable solutions that adhere to architectural standards and non‑functional requirements.
  • Guide technical strategy and modernization efforts by collaborating with architects and senior engineers to drive cloud readiness, application modernization, data strategy, and alignment to next‑generation architecture.
  • Manage resources, vendors, and budgets, while building a strong talent pipeline and cultivating a culture that supports innovation and long‑term organizational capability.
