CNC Lathe Operator

Job Title: CNC Lathe Operator (Tool Room / Job Work Environment)Department: ProductionReports To: Production Supervisor / Tool Room Incharge1. Job PurposeTo independently set up, operate, and optimize CNC turning machines for low batch, high-mix tooling components while ensuring required accuracy, finish, and delivery timelines.

• 2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Machine Setup & OperationPerform complete machine setup including chucking, tool setting, and offset setting.
• Read and understand component drawings, tolerances, and process sheets.
• Select appropriate cutting tools, inserts, and parameters based on material (tool steel, carbide, etc.).
• Run first piece and ensure approval before batch production.
• Handle frequent changeovers efficiently.
• B. Programming (if applicable)Modify/edit CNC programs at machine (Fanuc/Siemens/other control).
• Perform basic programming for simple jobs (preferred).
• Optimize cycle time while maintaining quality.
• C. Quality ControlPerform self-inspection using instruments:
• Micrometers
• Vernier calipers
• Bore gauges
• Dial indicators
• Maintain dimensional accuracy as per drawing.
• Identify and correct deviations during machining.
• D. Productivity & DeliveryAchieve planned output as per daily schedule.
• Minimize setup time for small batch production.
• Coordinate with planning team for job priorities.
• E. Tool & Machine CareMaintain proper tool life and track insert usage.
• Ensure machine cleanliness and basic maintenance.
• Report abnormal sounds, vibration, or breakdowns.
• F. DocumentationRecord production data, inspection results, and tool usage.
• Follow job cards / route cards accurately.
• G. Safety & DisciplineFollow all shop floor safety practices.
• Use PPE (gloves, goggles, safety shoes).
• Maintain discipline and 5S on machine.
• 3. Skill RequirementsTechnical SkillsStrong understanding of CNC turning operations
• Ability to handle tight tolerances (±0.01 mm or better)
• Knowledge of machining materials:
• Tool steels (D2, H13, etc.)
• Carbide (preferred exposure)
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings
• Behavioral SkillsHigh attention to detail
• Ownership mindset (important in low-batch work)
• Ability to handle job variety without supervision
• Problem-solving approach
• 4. Experience & QualificationITI / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
• 2–4 years experience in CNC turning
• Experience in tool room / job shop / precision components preferred
