Job Title: PLC Programmer
Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented PLC Programmer to design, program, simulate, and test automated machinery and processes. In this role, you will be responsible for developing control systems from scratch, troubleshooting existing PLC logic, and integrating hardware like HMIs, SCADA systems, and VFDs. The ideal candidate enjoys problem-solving in fast-paced industrial environments and is comfortable collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams to optimize production efficiency and safety.
- Key Responsibilities
- Programming & Development: Design, code, and test PLC programs using standard languages (Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagrams, Sequential Function Charts).
- HMI/SCADA Integration: Develop user-friendly Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems to allow operators to monitor and control processes.
- System Commissioning: Travel to plant sites to oversee the installation, commissioning, and startup of newly automated systems.
- Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Diagnose, debug, and resolve complex code errors or hardware failures in existing control systems to minimize production downtime.
- Network Configuration: Set up and maintain industrial communication networks (e.g., EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profinet, Profibus).
- Documentation: Create detailed technical documentation, including electrical schematics, control narratives, user manuals, and Bill of Materials (BOM).
- Safety Compliance: Ensure all automated systems comply with relevant industry safety standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO, CE, or local equivalents).
- Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience/technical certifications).
- PLC Platforms: Proven experience programming major PLC brands such as:

- Siemens (TIA Portal, STEP 7)
- Schneider Electric, Omron, or Mitsubishi (depending on company stack)
- HMI/SCADA Software: Experience with FactoryTalk View, Ignition, Wonderware/InTouch, or WinCC.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of electrical circuits, schematics, VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), servo motors, and industrial sensors.
- Problem-Solving: Analytical mindset with the ability to troubleshoot complex electro-mechanical issues under pressure.
- Preferred / "Nice-to-Have" QualificationsExperience with industrial robotics (FANUC, ABB, KUKA).
- Familiarity with Python, C/C++, or SQL for data logging and advanced automation tasks.
- Knowledge of Industry 4.0 concepts, IoT integration, or cybersecurity for operational technology (OT).
- Work Environment & Physical DemandsLocation: Mix of office environment (for coding/design) and manufacturing plant floor (for testing/commissioning).
- Travel: Up to [Insert Percentage, e.g., 20-30%] travel to client sites or manufacturing facilities.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and walk/stand for extended periods during site commissioning.
- Tips for Customizing This JD:Specify the Platform: If your facility only uses Siemens, remove mentions of Allen-Bradley to filter out irrelevant candidates.
- Define the Travel: Be realistic about travel expectations. "Field Commissioning" roles often require much higher travel (50%+) than "Plant-Based" roles.
- Highlight Industry Specifics: If you are in food & beverage, mention familiarity with sanitary design standards; if oil & gas, mention hazardous area classifications (Class I Div
