Job Description
A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) programmer translates engineering blueprints and CAD models into precise G-code instructions. These codes control automated machinery like lathes and mills to cut, drill, and shape raw materials like metal and plastics. It is a high-precision manufacturing role combining engineering knowledge with software skills.
A typical day for a CNC programmer involves several core tasks:
- Blueprint Analysis: Studying technical drawings to determine dimensions, tolerances, and the most efficient production sequence.
- Software Programming: Using CAD/CAM software (like Fusion 360, Mastercam, or SolidWorks) to create 3D models and generate exact toolpaths.
- Machine Calibration: Setting up tooling, feeds, speeds, and work-holding devices to ensure the machine cuts parts perfectly.
- Testing & Operation: Running simulations to prevent errors, and often operating or overseeing the physical machine during the initial run.
