Job Description:
A Commis is an entry-level position in the kitchen of the food and beverage service industry. The role involves assisting chefs and other kitchen staff in food preparation, cooking, and maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment. This position provides the opportunity for skill development and learning about all aspects of food production, from preparing ingredients to plating and presenting dishes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Food Preparation:
- Assist in the preparation of ingredients for cooking, such as washing, peeling, chopping, slicing, and measuring ingredients.
- Prepare simple dishes or components of a dish under the supervision of senior kitchen staff.
- Follow recipes and instructions given by the chef to ensure consistency and quality of dishes.
- Ensure all food items are prepared according to safety and sanitation standards.
- Cooking and Plating:
- Assist in cooking, frying, grilling, and other cooking techniques as directed by chefs or senior cooks.
- Plate and garnish dishes according to presentation guidelines and restaurant standards.
- Monitor the quality of food being prepared, ensuring that all dishes meet the restaurant's quality and taste standards.
- Kitchen Organization and Cleanliness:
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the kitchen, including cleaning workstations, utensils, and equipment after use.
- Ensure that all kitchen tools and equipment are properly sanitized and in good working condition.
- Store food ingredients and supplies in the proper manner to avoid contamination and maintain freshness.
- Adhere to health and safety regulations in the kitchen, such as proper handling, storage, and disposal of food.
- Stock Management:
- Assist in receiving and storing deliveries, ensuring proper inventory management.
- Monitor stock levels of ingredients and kitchen supplies and report any shortages to the supervisor.
- Ensure food items are properly rotated to prevent spoilage or waste.
- Assisting Senior Kitchen Staff:
- Assist chefs and other kitchen staff with more complex tasks as needed.
- Take direction from senior cooks and follow instructions to complete prep work or assist in meal service.
- Support the kitchen team during busy periods by ensuring dishes are prepared in a timely manner.
- Health and Safety Compliance:
- Follow food safety and sanitation guidelines to maintain a clean, hygienic kitchen environment.
- Keep all kitchen areas and equipment sanitized and organized.
- Handle food items safely, following proper hygiene practices, and adhere to local food safety standards.
- Learning and Development:
- Take the initiative to learn new cooking techniques, food preparation methods, and kitchen operations.
- Attend training sessions or workshops as required to improve culinary skills and knowledge.
- Develop an understanding of kitchen workflows, food presentation, and plating techniques.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a kitchen or food service environment is beneficial but not required.
- A passion for cooking and the food industry.
- Basic knowledge of kitchen safety, food hygiene, and sanitation practices.
- Ability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
Skills:
- Basic cooking and food preparation skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
- Basic knowledge of kitchen equipment and utensils.
- Good communication skills and a positive attitude.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
