RHEL L1 Support Engineer

Experience: Minimum 2 years

Role Overview
The RHEL L1 Support Engineer will be responsible for providing first-level support for Linux-based server environments, primarily Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). The role focuses on monitoring, incident resolution, basic administration tasks, and ensuring smooth day-to-day server operations.

 

Key Responsibilities
1. System Monitoring & Incident Management

 

Monitor Linux servers using available monitoring tools.
Respond to alerts and basic incidents within defined SLAs.
Perform initial troubleshooting for OS-level issues (CPU, memory, disk, process failures).
Log, update, and close tickets in the ITSM tool (ServiceNow / Remedy / Jira).

 

2. Basic Linux Administration

User and group management (add/modify/delete).
File system navigation, permissions, and ownership management.
Basic package installation and service restarts using yum/dnf/systemctl.
Managing logs and performing initial log analysis (/var/log/messages, secure logs, application logs).
Performing health checks and preparing daily reports. 

3. Patch & Update Support

Assist in OS patching and kernel updates under guidance from L2/L3 teams.
Validate post-patching checks and system stability.

4. Backup & Recovery Assistance

Execute routine backup verification tasks.
Support L2 team in restoring files from backup tools (NetBackup, Commvault, etc.).

 

5. Compliance & Security

 

Ensure servers adhere to basic security and compliance standards.
Apply standard hardening guidelines under supervision.

 

6. Collaboration & Escalation

 

Work closely with L2/L3 Linux engineers for issue escalation.
Coordinate with network, storage, and application teams when required

 

Required Skills

 

Strong understanding of Linux fundamentals (RHEL/CentOS preferred).
Hands-on knowledge of:

 Basic shell commands & scripting
Systemctl, journalctl, and log analysis
Partition and file system basics 

Familiarity with ticketing tools (ServiceNow/Jira/Remedy).
Understanding of networking basics (TCP/IP, DNS, SSH).
Ability to troubleshoot common L1 issues.
Good communication and documentation skills.

Educational Qualification

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or equivalent.
Red Hat certifications (RHCSA) are an added advantage.
