Job Description

The Infection Control Microbiologist will work closely under the guidance of Associate Project Director and Senior Project Manager. The Infection Control Microbiologist will be a key member of the multi-disciplinary team of infection control experts consisting of Architect and infection control nurse. S/he should bring in strong subject matter expertise on infection control/ airborne/environmental control practices. S/he will be part of assessments at various primary, secondary and tertiary level health facilities. The Infection Control Microbiologist will also develop capacities of the health facility staff at the state/district/wards and build capacities of the state teams for conducting infection control assessments. S/he will play a pivotal role in training, building and mentoring the state respiratory infection control units (RICUs)and will lead this activity. S/he will develop partnerships and networks required for advocating Infection Control activities at the health, engineering and health planning departments at state and national levels. S/he must also be able to work with ease on Microsoft excel, and must be current with the apps/software relevant to his work area. Specific roles of this position include: 1. Program Planning: a) Provide leadership and guidance to health facility in charges on Administrative, Personnel Protection and Environmental measures to be taken for implementation of infection Control activities at high infectious settings/hospitals to prevent transmission of TB. b) Support the IPC team in developing innovative approaches to improve quality of infection control measures in healthcare facilities and Tuberculosis (TB) Laboratories with an architectural/structural perspective. c) Suggest measures to the administration and senior management of health facilities on low cost, user friendly options and sustainable innovations to strengthen airborne infection control measures. d) Draw up schedule of regular and frequent site visits for health facility assessments and assess the progress of infection control implementation, e) He/ She will be responsible for providing technical inputs and mentoring medical officers/in-charges, DMC laboratory technician and other ancillary staff in the secondary and primary health care facilities targeted in the project area. f) Conduct and strengthen Airborne Infection Control activities in primary and secondary public health institutions and building capacities of the staff in public health institutions g) Promote health care worker surveillance with fellow colleagues and paramedical staff. h) Develop partnerships and networks required for Infection Control activities at the health institutions. i) Participate and contribute to the development of internal reporting systems, prepare detailed implementation plans, monthly / quarterly / annual work plan, narrative reports and financial reports, and assist in annual budgeting exercises as required for the project and support the Senior Manager and other team members 2. Capacity Development: a) Develop capacity building materials required for the project in tandem with other team members. b) Development of training modules, build the master trainers through training of trainers, prepare documents in relation to various technical aspects with field visit experiences. c) Guide the staff of public health facilities in taking up civil, mechanical works and as part of infection control activities. d) Provide assistance to the team in identifying and negotiating with external resources for training and technical aspects of the program. 3. Representation and Advocacy: a) Interact and build relationships with senior government officials, liaise with representatives of the medical fraternity, establish linkages with potential partner centres, etc., to enhance the effectiveness of the project. b) Be responsible for effective coordination with the medical staff, medical colleges and other stake holders at state/national levels for bringing collaboration and to bring synergy to the project. 4. Program monitoring and feedback: a) Conducting routine meetings at the field level, attend meetings, and update the senior management on the status of project implementation periodically. b) Conduct meeting with higher officials at MCGM/States/CTD on various technical aspects of the implementations of the suggestions and report back to senior management. 5. Documentation and reporting: a) Be responsible for making reports of various assessments/visits in consensus with the IPC team. b) Be responsible to get the good practices, success stories documented and ensuring regular reporting by the facilities and provide periodical reports to the CDC, State TB office, Central TB Division as and when required. 6. Team synergy and cross collaborations: a) Be a team player and develop cross collaborations with different projects within the organization. b) Share the attained knowledge, expertise and experience and support other projects working on similar thematic areas at the organizational level. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item. 1. MBBS, MD (Microbiology) with minimum of three years’ experience in public health program. 2. M.Sc. (Microbiology) with minimum of two years/ B.Sc. (Microbiology) with minimum of three years’ experience in public health program. 3. Should have proven ability in critical thinking, strategy formulation, leadership and team building in a public health program setting. 4. Previous experience or training on working in infection control domain will be an added advantage. 5. Excellent communication skills both written as well as verbal in English, Marathi and Hindi. 6. Excellent computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office. The position requires travel within Mumbai and other states.
